Artist Articles: Angel Komazec

Meet the Artist: Angel Komazec
Angel Komazec has been an artist for as long as she can remember, but it was about 14 or 15 years ago that she began painting professionally. For Angel, art is more than a creative outlet—it is something tangible that allows her to turn the ideas in her head into something she can see, touch, and share. Most importantly, she says, it makes her happy.
Originally from Baytown, Texas, Angel has called Louisiana home since 2004. She now lives on the North Shore of Lake Pontchartrain in Madisonville after previously living in San Francisco. With a husband originally from Europe and years of travel and different cultural experiences, Angel draws inspiration from a wide range of places, people, and experiences rather than one specific influence.

Her newest work is filled with large, expressive florals and vibrant color. Angel jokes that she is allergic to just about every flower, so painting them gives her a way to surround herself with their beauty without the allergy attack. These bold floral pieces are a relatively recent direction for her, emerging over the past year as she began focusing more intentionally on creating work that reflects her own happiness.
Angel is also embracing experimentation in her studio. Her current work with raw canvas, watered-down inks, and acrylics creates unpredictable washes and textures that can resemble water or tie-dye. The process has challenged her to slow down—a particularly welcome change for an artist who is accustomed to working quickly and following an idea as soon as it arrives.
That element of unpredictability has become part of the appeal. Rather than trying to control every mark, Angel allows the materials to take her somewhere unexpected. If something doesn't go according to plan, she lets it evolve into something new. Her willingness to experiment extends across acrylics, inks, markers, cyanotypes, and even oils, although she prefers acrylics because they allow her to work at her naturally fast pace.
Travel, color, new experiences, and everyday life all find their way into Angel's creative process. As she enters a new chapter of life, she is intentionally choosing to focus on things that bring her joy. Her goal is simple: to create beautiful things that bring happiness into other people's homes.

Angel appreciates The Foyer for bringing together such a diverse collection of artists and styles in one beautiful space. She was initially amazed that her work would have a place in the gallery, but quickly came to appreciate the clientele and the way the artists complement one another. For her, The Foyer has become a place where different creative voices can exist side by side while still standing on their own.

Although Angel has accepted commissions in the past, she prefers having creative freedom rather than working from an extremely specific set of instructions. Her artistic process begins with a vision, and she works best when she can follow that vision organically rather than trying to reproduce an exact image or predetermined color palette.
Through her colorful florals and experimental work, Angel is creating paintings that are meant to feel as joyful as they look. Her art reflects a willingness to embrace change, try something new, and find beauty in the unexpected.

Visit The Foyer at 3655 Perkins Road, Baton Rouge, Monday through Saturday 10 AM to 5 PM and Sunday 12 to 5 PM to see more of Angel's paintings.
