How to Shop a Multi-Vendor Store (And Leave With Something You Love)

Updated: Sep 11
Walking into a multi-vendor store for the first time can feel a little overwhelming. Hundreds of pieces from dozens of different artists and merchants, all sharing the same space. Where do you even start?

After eighteen years of watching people shop The Foyer, we have noticed that the people who leave happiest tend to do a few things differently. Here is what we have learned.
Come in without a plan first.
This sounds counterintuitive, but your first pass through the store should be purely observational. Don't shop yet. Just walk. Notice what stops you. Notice what you touch. Notice what you photograph on your phone. That instinct, the one that makes you pause in front of something, is telling you something about your taste that a Pinterest board cannot.
Give yourself fifteen minutes to just look before you decide anything.
Then go back to what stopped you.
Once you have done a full lap, go back to the things that caught your eye. Now is when you start asking questions. Does this fit anywhere in my home? Does it go with anything I already own? Or does it feel right even if I can't explain why?
That last one matters. Some of the best purchases people make here are things they couldn't justify on paper but couldn't leave without. Trust that feeling. Original pieces are not like furniture you order from a catalog, you may not find that exact thing again.
Think in terms of moments, not rooms.
A common mistake when decorating is trying to find something that works with everything. Instead, think about a single moment in your home — the wall above the sofa, the entryway table, the corner of the bedroom that feels empty. Shop for that one spot. It is a much easier decision and it tends to produce better results.
Ask the people who work here.
Every item at The Foyer came from a specific person, an artist, a craftsperson, a merchant who curated it for a reason. The people on our floor know the stories behind the pieces. They know which artists are local, which items are one of a kind, and which things tend to sell fast. If you are stuck between two things or not sure what you are looking for, ask. That conversation almost always helps.
Give yourself permission to come back.
A multi-vendor store like The Foyer changes constantly. Merchants bring in new inventory every week. Artists rotate work in and out. The piece you are unsure about today may be gone tomorrow, but something better may arrive next week.
If something is speaking to you and you can make it work, get it. If you genuinely need to think about it, think about it, but know the floor will look different the next time you walk in. That is part of what makes it worth coming back.
The Foyer is open Monday through Saturday, 10 AM to 5 PM, and Sunday from noon to 5 PM. Come see what's on the floor this week at 3655 Perkins Road, Baton Rouge.
