Artist Articles: Betty Efferson

Updated: Jun 24
There is something about a Betty Efferson painting that catches your attention from across a room. Her work invites you into moments that feel both familiar and sacred, the kind of lively scenes that allow viewers to spark their imagination.
Betty has been an artist at The Foyer for a decade now, and her abstract paintings have found their way into homes across Baton Rouge and beyond. If you have wandered through our gallery walls, you have likely paused in front of one of her captivating pieces.

Betty didn’t always know she was an artist. She became dedicated to painting when she turned 60, after she took a workshop on decorative painting. With her intuitive approach, Betty fell in love with creating emotional interpretations of life. Instead of sticking herself into the box of realism, she believed in her own playful process. Her ability to balance joy and craftsmanship allowed her paintings to build a full-time career for more than two decades now.
Her choice of medium ranges from oils, acrylics, pastels, and "absolutely, totally everything.” Her paintings often gesture to the treasures of daily life: a vase of flowers catching morning light, a cluster of lily pads floating in a pond, an open doorway with potted plants framing its sides. These are not grand statements. They are gentle observations, rendered with the kind of attention that transforms the ordinary into something worth framing.

What sets Betty's work apart is her ability to find the emotion in everything. Her painting technique is instinctual, leading with a certain affection in each brushstroke. A hydrangea is not just a flower in her hands. It becomes a study in subtle color shifts, in the way petals hold shadows, in the quiet drama of something beautiful simply existing.
“My interest is to paint the way things feel,” she said. “Everyone knows what a flower looks and smells like; you need to know how it feels to be a flower.”
Her palette tends toward the vibrant and luminous: creamy whites, bright blues, with a touch of enhanced hues taken from nature. There is a timelessness to her compositions that makes them feel at home in both a traditional Southern interior and a more contemporary space.
“My paintings are always alive,” she explains. “People have the authority and the wish to see anything they want in my paintings.”
